The Good Life every Thursday - b/w Dexter Wansel - The Sweetest Pain

I'm doing a new weekly neighborhood jam at El Ay Si in Long Island City, Queens NYC.

No cover to get in, we turn the lights down low, there is great comfort food and drinks, and you'll hear me playing sweet steppers, Soul, Funk, classic Salsa, Dub, Lover's Rock, Golden Era Hip-Hop, Disco, Boogie and I'll even make room for new music as long as it's good.

If you aren't in Queens it's still pretty accessible. If you are in Greenpoint or WIlliamsburg, Brooklyn it's right over that small Pulaski bridge, which you can even walk over, or right over the 59th St. Bridge from Manhattan. It's every Thursday night at El Ay Si, 47-38 Vernon Boulevard (718) 389-8781.

Sunlightsquare "I Believe in Miracles" cover version

Another great cover of the classic tune, this one in a Latin Jazz style. Thanks to Kamui for playing this one at the last night of Lost & Found at Savales. It's actually a "new" release (last year I think), and it sounds pretty darn good to me. This is the instrumental version which I prefer for now. It's out there and pretty easy to get, so snatch it up while copies still exist. This should ignite any dancefloor where people have a pulse.

LAST CALL AT LOST & FOUND TONIGHT!

Yes I know it's last minute, but I just found out today that Savales in Brooklyn is closing down tonight, and what better night to shut down on than the Lost & Found night? For years, Lost & Found at Savales has been the safe haven, the rendezvous spot, the secret clubhouse, the meeting of the minds, the writers bench for NYC's realest DJs, etc etc etc, and tonight is going to be the EPIC farewell as the resident Lost & Found DJs along with amazing special guests like Rockin Rob will shut the place down with the most hardcore 45s all night. I've been lucky enough to be asked to throw down too, and am feeling pretty hyped about it.

DO NOT MISS IT @ 285 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn!!!

R.I.P Bobby Robinson of Enjoy Records, Harlem, NYC

R.I.P Bobby Robinson behind Enjoy Records out of Harlem, NYC.

Here is an article from the New York's Daily News:
"BOBBY ROBINSON, whose tiny record shop on Harlem's 125th St. spawned No. 1 national hits and made him an uptown patriarch for six decades, died yesterday.

He was 93 and had been ill for several years - though he regularly went to work at his shop until it was forced to close in January 2008.

Impeccably dressed, well-spoken and ambitious to make his mark in the entertainment business, Robinson opened Bobby's Happy House in 1946.

His shop was the first black-owned business on 125th St., and within five years he used it to launch a series of record labels.

Sometimes working with his brother Danny, who also had an office on 125th St., Robinson recorded hundreds of artists from Gladys Knight and the Pips to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.

Knight's first hit, "Every Beat of My Heart," was released on Robinson's Fury label.

Robinson, a South Carolina native, had a No. 1 national hit in 1959 with Wilbert Harrison's "Kansas City" - and said years later that a hit of that magnitude crippled his business because he had to press so many copies he couldn't promote any other artists.

But his Red Robin, Whirlin' Disc, Fire, Fury and Enjoy labels became legendary in the rhythm and blues world, and his releases by artists like the Channels, Teenchords and Scarlets helped define the sound of the New York streets through the 1950s.

Robinson ultimately recorded a wide range of artists that included the great bluesman Elmore James, whom Robinson inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In the late 1970s, Robinson became one of the first label owners to record rap music, cutting artists like Flash, Doug E. Fresh and Spoonie Gee.

Robinson eventually had to move the shop around the corner in the late 1990s, and he closed for good on Jan. 21, 2008, when his new landlord decided to raze the building for a development.

"I've seen 125th St. at its best and worst," Robinson said in late 2007. "And I'll tell you, there's no more exciting place in the world."

And here is a slept on Boogie tune I love playing off of this label:

Milton Wright - Keep It Up

Huge! I can't believe I've never posted this song here before.

Captain Sky - Moon Child (AVI) - More Memories From Moscow

Dropped this classic Deep Disco tune in Moscow. Posting it with a pic of me landing at Moscow's airport, because it looks like I am landing on the Moon in this photo. Moon Child, get it? It was below 0 degrees when we landed on the tarmac. Thankfully I had the sense to bring really warm clothes on the plane.

Back From Moscow!

Brought home a couple of awesome Russian Rare Grooves! The record I'm holding in the photo is the one playing in the youtube clip:

What a trip! Great times, good friends, music, food, drinks, the whole nine yards. Thanks to Javybz and Alex for being such gracious hosts, showing me around this awesome city, and giving me the opportunity to lay down some deep music for Moscow's party people while bringing in the New Year. 2011, we are going to have a blast!
