Jason Lev's Sound of Gold Volume 8

It's been a few years since Jason has busted out a mix for the masses, and this was worth the wait. Tons of great music, blended to perfection. If you aren't already familiar with his mix series, you can find all 8 volumes here:

McBoingboing's Valentines Day Mix "Love Me Love Me Not" volume 4!!!

Robbie Busch aka DJ McBoingboing has created quite a tradition here at Secret Rendezvous with his annual Valentine's Day mixtape. The holiday is secondary to the annual bomb shell of a mix. I spend the rest of the year listening to these mixes, enjoying the sounds, getting inspired, and bugging him for track id's. And no, there is no tracklist yet, so don't ask, but it will exist on this very blog one day.

So cuddle up with a loved one, or just put those headphones on and prowl the streets looking for someone to love this week. Here it is, "Love Me Love Me Not" Volume 4!

ENJOY!

Donald Byrd "Places and Spaces"

Another classic. This intro still gets me every time.

R.I.P Donald Byrd

He made love come around, made us think twice, funked up our lives, and made us wanna hustle. I will always identify with this tune in particular as it was an early favorite of mine. I must have dropped this a million times during sets in the early-mid-late 90s, and even recently at a Secret Rendezvous jam, where it was fantastic to see the club crowd still hustles to this. R.I.P. Donald Byrd, one of the best to do it.

Al Kent's Disco Love 3 in the pocket

OK I got a cd copy in the mail, but I need to cop the vinyl real bad. Al Kent's blade is as sharp as ever. This thing is a chock full of killer tunes, and I promise there will still be surprises for even the deepest Disco aficionados. The LP starts off with Al's edit of the Mighty Gents, which is a pretty obscure mid-tempo 7" Disco Funk crusher. It's a private press thing for an old Broadway show, but you'd never have guessed what the damn thing was all about. I actually sent the info to Al, and he turned around and spliced the shit out of it and made it even funkier. Nice one, you made your boy proud! The cd then picks up the pace and chugs along with edits of Peter Brown's obscure Sammy Gordon re-work Sandy's Gang, ghetto ass jams like Gregory Andre and Bo Galigher for the lo-fi heads that like their tunes dirty, plenty of deep and pure dance floor gems like my new favorites Ronnie April's "Dancer's Theme" and Sil Austin's "Disco Music", and of course fantastic vocal cuts too for the lovers like Neo Experience, which is a stand out jam for romantic sucker in all of us.

The cover art is sick, there are lots of great rarities on here, and the vinyl is limited. You sleep, you weep! Get your fix now!

And if you missed it, I interviewed Al Kent during the earliest days of this site (2009). We chat about Disco, growing up with a Northern Soul record habit, etc. Read it HERE.

Nydia Ines "Love One Another"

Nydia Ines (formerly known as the Honeydripper) is immersed in the NYC soul scene. She keeps herself pretty busy at Daptone Records, doing radio spots at East Village Radio, is an integral part of the Ridgewood Soulcial Club, delivered a smashing set at our very own Secret Rendezvous and is one of my favorite soul DJs spinning gigs around New York City. I've been chasing Nydia for a little while, trying to score a mix for the site, and she finally came through with a recording of some of her favorite tunes. It's a great mix of slow jams, that creep into modern soul, funk and disco rarities perfect for the dancefloor and our private mind gardens. Thanks Nydia, this was well worth the wait.
