KENNY DOPE LIVE AT BUMPSHOP ALL FUNK/SOUL/LATIN 45s SET!!!

Kenny Dope Live @ Bumpshop, APT, New York - 01-10-2009 by Kenny Dope

Bumpshop was such a great party, and celebrating the anniversary with a legend like Kenny Dope made this a night to remember. I can honestly say this particular night with Kenny was one of the most fun parties I've boogied at in the last few years. Kenny laid shit down with an all 45s set that rocked the place to it's very funky core. A set this fly should practically not ever be heard again! Guaranteed to bring out your inner break-boy, this set is DOPE DOPE DOPE DOPe DOpe Dope dope ope pe pe e...

Konono No.1

This posse sounds as bad ass as they look. Konono No.1 have been around since the 60s, and they either tweak, modify or straight up make their own instruments. Hailing from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, their percussion instruments are made out of items from a local scrap yard, and the result is a compelling sound that has won them fans all across the globe. I love the fact that they are just trying to make music, their own version of their local music on a shoe string budget, and they manage to grab the attention of indie kids all over the world that play their music along side groups like Can, Kraftwerk and Sonic Youth.

Play this clip, and "Assume the Crash Position" just like their latest Lp tell you to do:

Interesting video here

"Mark the 45 King" killing it on the portables

I'm sure most of us have seen this video before, but I'll post it up for those that haven't. Mark the 45 King just wrecking it with 7"s on the portables.

I never realized he posted up on the youtube link. This is what he says:

"The main thing about the Video to me is Everything is small

the 45 record / the Mixer / the turntable , Thats the trick I was

trying to get across went I made this Video . All I did was Count the BPM of any record I want to play and play them

in order,And to the Damage: the records can take getting throw around a little bit,and I

don't even play them alot anyway , and it looks cool.

NO RECORDS WAS HARM in the make of this Video

it's like a Rock Group Break their Guitars at the end of the show"

Joe Bataan - The Bottle (La Botellita)

Joe Bataan's feel good cover of the Gil Scot classic. This is some straight up joyous NYC Salsoul style Disco. I can't remember the last time I heard someone play this one out at a party. Either I don't go out enough (very possible this harsh winter), or heads aint playing this one enough.

It came out on Salsoul first, then licensed to RCA. There are clips of both, but this clip happens to sound better.

Guess what's going in my bag for next week....

Joe Bataan "Aftershower Funk"

I might as well throw up the OG of this Afro-Filipino-Latin-Funk Killer

The Fantastic Soul "Aftershower Funk" (Joe Bataan Cover) on Kay-Dee

Kenny Dope smashes it with his band's rendition of Joe Bataan's classic Latin Funk workout "Aftershower Funk" on Kay-Dee Records. This isn't actually the 45 version playing on the youtube clip, which is the mix down I prefer. What I like about the 45 is that it just jumps right in and rips through the jam. Even better, the b-side on the 45 is seriously heavy on the drum breaks, which tear through the vinyl so hard it would inspire even the shyest wall flower to throw down some wicked latin style b-boy moves on the dance floor, or at least think they were throwing down some wicked latin style b-boy moves. But you know what they say, "Dance like no one is watching".

I just picked this one up today at Big City Records (212) 539-0208, so cop it while it's hot and they've still got stock, especially since they have the blue vinyl copies. There is another single scheduled to drop, and finally a full LP in the fall, stay tuned.

I also nerded out over getting a Kay-Dee t-shirt hooked up. I caught the red and yellow one. How you like me now?

Frankie Zhivago "The Age of Flying High" LP

Digging deeper for unknown Disco, Funk and Soul music had gotten me into some deeper Caribbean sounds over the years, where I seem to keep turning up interesting music. One of the LPs I've been after for a while has been Frankie Zhivago's "The Age of Flying High" LP. Filled with that hot Island Funk, Soul and Reggae sound, it doesn't hurt that the legendary Boris Gardner was involved on this LP. Luckily, I won't have to dig as hard anymore, as Superfly Records in Paris have released a beautiful and high-quality re-issue of this, which is fully licensed, and on 180 Gram vinyl (the good stuff!), and went as far as making authentic paste on covers printed in Japan.

Now you won't have to listen to the sub par quality on shitty youtube clips anymore, and can have superior sound. Sleep and weep!

DJ Boogieman's Live Cumbia, Cuban Funk & Tropical sounds mix!

I just scored an exclusive blazing mix of Cumbia, Cuban Funk & Tropical sounds by Pablo AKA Boogieman, recorded live at Lost & Found!

This mix was recorded live at The Lost & Found party, right after a set by special guest DJ Voodoo Frank, when Boogieman comes on deck to keep the party rocking with the Latin/African sounds. Boogieman was a resident DJ at the Lost & Found party, whom I first had the pleasure of meeting when he wowed me with a scorcher of a Reggae set the night I had the privilege of being a guest DJ. Pablo is consistent and brings us the heat once again for this deadly mix of tropical sounds. Keep an eye/ear out for him!

Tony Love "We're Doing It Together"

I love the feeling of independently recorded soul music. I just caught this soulful stepper from 1980. Mid-tempo madness, and still feeling the tail end of the 70s in this production. Turn the lights down low, it's time to bring the Romance.
